District changes in the Music Program - Please take a minute to show your support for the district music programs by printing this letter of support, signing it, and forwarding it the the school board via fax or email.

Important note from the President

No doubt that many of you have seen the Hilliard e-News blast regarding the re-instatement of middle school sports and some of the gifted programs within the Hilliard City School District.  As the President of the Hilliard Music Boosters, I ask of you a couple of things.  First, please practice restraint.  Inflaming the situation and creating more divisiveness between the music programs and the athletic programs will only lead to bigger problems.  Second, please stay informed.  I have been and will continue to be involved in these community-based discussions as a representative of the Hilliard Music Boosters.  I have been in contact with music department staff, the administration, and several of you regarding these issues since they started surfacing after the recent defeat of the May school levy.  I have meetings scheduled with the administration and we will speak to the board as one, unified voice.

What we cannot have are a bunch of incendiary e-mails and letters to the administration, school board members, the press, etc.  I am not trying to stifle free speech and expression of opinion.  I am politely asking you to work with us, the largest single-purpose booster program in the district, to speak with one singular and unified voice in support of the music and arts programs within the City of Hilliard Schools.  We do not know all the facts as of yet.  We don’t know all the details of any decisions made or the implications of what the extensions will mean to all extracurricular activities.  One possible outcome would be a pay-to-play system for all extracurricular activities, not just sports.  Thus, in trying to save a few programs in the short term, the consequences of failure could mean huge impacts across many programs, including our music programs from 5th grade to 12th grade and across the board.

I will be in attendance at the June 6th school board meeting to discuss these issues.  I cannot stop you from attempting to speak your mind there or through any other means.  But I do ask that you consider your thoughts and words carefully and that you deliver your message as being of one in support of the Hilliard Music Boosters, all music departmental staff, and all the awesome music programs within the Hilliard City School District.  I and the HMB Board will be in communication with you through many of these same channels throughout the course of this process and look forward to your continued support.  Please also keep in touch with www.hilliardmusicboosters.org for more information or contact me at president@hilliardmusicboosters.org.

 Thank you.

 Jeff Keller
HMB President

Urgent Note:

We need everyone that is using their Kroger Card in the Community Rewards program to re-enroll for next year. The Community Rewards program gives the Boosters money every time you use your Kroger Card to buy something. This does not cost you anything.

To re-enroll go to www.krogercommunityrewards.com , click on Ohio, click on re-enroll, & log in. You can search for Hilliard Music Boosters, click on the location and save. Your all set until next year.

Hilliard City Schools requires volunteers to renew their identification badges every five years.  Volunteers who obtained a badge prior to December 31, 2006 will need an updated background check along with a new badge no later than June 2011.

The Human Resources Department will perform all background checks at the district’s Central Office, 5323 Cemetery Road.  The cost for the IntelliCorp background check is $9.  If you have not lived in Ohio for at least five years, an $18 nationwide background check is required.  The cost of the new badge is included.  If you have been fingerprinted within the last 12 months and have a copy of the results, you may submit those and simply request a new $2 volunteer badge.  Badges may be replaced at any time for a $2 charge.  Hilliard City Schools accepts cash, check or credit/debit card (Visa or Master Card only).

Volunteer walk-in hours for replacement badges are available Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m.  During winter, spring and summer breaks, volunteers must schedule an appointment.  You may also schedule an appointment outside of the normal walk-in hours by contacting the Human Resources Department at (614) 921-7124.  Thank you for volunteering for Hilliard City Schools!

If you are unsure when your badge expires, please email Brenda Ribble at Brenda_Ribble@hboe.org.  She will be able to look up your expiration date.

Who are the Hilliard Music Boosters?

The Hilliard Music Boosters organization is a group of supportive adults who assist, encourage and promote ALL music activities of the Hilliard School District.  That is for Band, Choir, and Orchestra!

What do they do?

Our purpose and mission is to assist in providing funds for musical equipment, uniforms, and any other needs of the music programs. There are many different ways to volunteer throughout the year.

When do they meet?

Meetings are held on a monthly basis during the school year, and are conducted at the "Chapter Level"  (i.e. Darby, Davidson, and coming soon for Bradley).  Check the calender for your Chapters dates and activities.

Why should I become involved?

By becoming an active member of the Hilliard Music Boosters or attending booster meetings, you will have first hand knowledge about what is going on with the music programs and your student. Your involvement and assistance will allow the music programs to continue the great achievements and growth that we have experienced the past few years.

What if I can’t be there for every activity?

No Problem! The Boosters understand the importance of other family obligations. Not everyone can be there for everything. However, we do hope that each family can volunteer throughout the year. By doing this, we will not only be able to provide everything needed for our students, but we will also share in the responsibilities and show our support.

What can I do to help?

There are many opportunities during the year to help. Here are just a few activities that need adult volunteers:

Chaperones (All): Adult volunteers assist the programs (Band, Choir, and Orchestra) to state competitions. Some programs like the Band, have fall activites that include football games and band competitions.  Duties can include serving water, helping with uniforms and instruments, and help ensure the safety of all students.

Percussion Pit Crew (Band): During football half-time performances and competitions, the percussion equipment must be moved on and off the field in a timely manner. Volunteers are also needed to drive the trailers to all band activities. Students can always use more help in loading and unloading the equipment.

Athletic Event Concessions (All): All of the field sports concessions are staffed by boosters. It a great way to raise money for the boosters, meet other parents, and have fun.

Fund Raising and Ways and Means (All): Each year, the boosters organize activities to raise funds for the general music and student accounts. Fund raisers include the Hilliard Band Invitational, Kroger Cards, and any other opportunities that may arise.

How do I find out more?

That’s the easy part!  Plan to attend any Booster meeting or speak with any Booster Officer.  We will be glad to answer any questions you have.
